Exploring Spectrophobia: The Paraphilia of Mirrors and the Fear of Reflection

Spectrophobia, a psychological condition often linked with paraphilic tendencies, is the intense fear or obsession with mirrors and one’s reflection. But, is it truly about the fear? Or is it the unseen desires and psychological distortions that linger in the glass?

“Do not look,” they warned. But what if the desire lies not in the act of avoidance…but in the reflection itself?

In the gothic silence of night, when shadows stretch and the world is caught between the breaths of light, some hearts pulse with an unspoken terror. Spectrophobia is one of the most misunderstood phobias, where fear and obsession blend, creating a sense of strange, captivating allure. Some may view it as a purely irrational fear; others, as a deeper psychological condition, lurking beneath the surface, seeking control.

How I Became a Vampire and a Vampirologist: A Gothic Journey from Porphyria to Romania

There are two things I have always been certain of: I was never meant for the daylight, and I was born to know the vampire.

While vampires in the True Blood sense don’t necessarily exist, vampirologists do, and I am proud to be both: a vampire in spirit and a vampirologist in title.

One is about who I am, and the other is about why I am. But how, you might ask, can someone be both the monster and the scholar? Let me take you to the shadows where this all began.

The Rise of Brian Boru: Cennétig mac Lorcáin and Medieval Ireland’s Royal Bloodline

When we think of the medieval period, our minds often go to Camelot: knights in shining armour, long gowns, grand feasts, and stories immortalized by movies and TV shows. But what about Ireland?

The Meaning of “Medieval”

“Medieval” is synonymous with the Middle Ages: a long and complex period in European history that stretches from the 5th century AD (around 476) to the 16th century AD (approximately 1500s). It’s a millennium that continues to inspire artists, writers, and dreamers of all kinds.

The Middle Ages are commonly bracketed between the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the dawn of the Renaissance, or more globally, the rise of the Ottoman Empire. It’s a time defined by transformation, fragmentation, and relentless ambition.

The Dark Origins of Sleeping Beauty: Cannibalism, Curses, and Gothic Horror in Fairy Tales

Fairy tales, as we know them today, are often softened, sanitized versions of their grim past. Before Disney transformed them into magical adventures for children, these stories were cautionary tales—dark warnings about the dangers of vanity, betrayal, and death.

Fairy tales often arrive in our lives as bedtime stories, wrapped in glittering enchantments and happy endings. But the origins of these tales are far from innocent. Before Disney gave us a spellbound princess awakened by true love’s kiss, Sleeping Beauty was a harrowing parable. One that was drenched in themes of sexual violence, cannibalism, and the grotesque misuse of power.

Just as Snow White‘s tale hides murder and necrophilia under a frosted sugar coating, Sleeping Beauty’s story is another gothic lesson in vulnerability, control, and the fine line between magic and malevolence.

The Forest That Shouldn’t Be: A Paranormal Beacon in Transylvania

Deep in the heart of Romania, on the outskirts of Cluj-Napoca, lies a forest so enigmatic, so unnerving, that it has been dubbed “The Bermuda Triangle of Transylvania.” The Hoia-Baciu Forest is not just Romania’s most haunted forest—it is a global landmark in paranormal history, occult phenomena, and gothic folklore. With roots reaching as far back as 6500 BC, this eerily beautiful woodland predates recorded Romanian civilization and remains shrouded in mystery.

Rapunzel Is Letting Down Her Hair: A Gothic Fairy Tale Diary About Love, Mental Health, and Moving to Romania Entry One

A broken-hearted artist with OCD, anxiety, and a Rapunzel complex is moving to Romania to follow a dream rooted in Vlad the Impaler, Gothic history, and a man named Samuel. This is her diary.

When a Thirteen-Year-Old Fell in Love with Vlad the Impaler

When I was thirteen years old, my history teacher handed us five countries to explore. The class chose Romania — mostly out of fascination with Dracula.

But not me.

My teacher, an unsung hero in my story, taught us the truth. Vlad Țepeș. Vlad the Impaler. Vlad Drăculea — the real-life ruler of Wallachia. The terrifying protector of his land and people. A man written in blood and immortalized by fear.

Buried Alive: The Gothic Horror of Immurement in Medieval Times

In the shadowed corridors of medieval castles and the crumbling walls of forgotten abbeys, the silent screams of the forsaken linger. Immurement—the act of sealing a person within a wall, crypt, or underground chamber—was one of the most horrifying fates to befall the condemned.

A living tomb, a slow descent into madness, and a fate worse than death itself. It was not simply an execution; it was the ultimate abandonment, a punishment that blurred the line between justice and sheer cruelty.

The True Horror of Snow White: A Gothic Tale of Betrayal and Bloodshed

Fairy tales, as we know them today, are often softened, sanitized versions of their grim past. Before Disney transformed them into magical adventures for children, these stories were cautionary tales—dark warnings about the dangers of vanity, betrayal, and death.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is no exception. The version we recognize today, filled with dwarfs, a poisoned apple, and a prince’s kiss, is a far cry from its gruesome origins, where murder, necrophilia, cannibalism, and violent revenge played central roles.

Haunted Hockey Arenas: The Ghosts of the Bell Centre and Beyond

The Montréal Canadiens, established in 1909, boast a storied history spanning over a century. Throughout this time, countless players, coaches, and fans have passed through their arenas, leaving behind a rich tapestry of memories and legends. Some believe that the sheer volume of emotions and experiences has imprinted spiritual echoes within these hallowed halls, giving rise to tales of hauntings and paranormal activity.

While specific accounts from players regarding paranormal experiences at the Bell Centre are scarce, the lore of the team’s former home, the Montréal Forum, is rich with such stories. The Forum, which witnessed 24 Stanley Cup championships, was believed by many to be haunted by the spirits of past hockey legends.

What Inspired A Stalker & Blocker? The Dark Side of Hockey & Obsession

Hockey is the fastest, hardest, most brutal team sport in the world. It’s a war on skates, played at speeds of 30 mph, with collisions that rival car crashes.

It’s gloves dropped at center ice, fists flying, blood splattering onto the ice like a crime scene. It’s a place where men become legends, where enforcers die young, and where goaltenders stand alone in a battlefield of flying rubber and shattered bones.

And beneath the surface?

There’s a darker side of hockey. One the league doesn’t like to talk about.

Young Blood Transfusion Have Anemic Result

There are many conspiracy theories out there concerning various topics. But one in particular caught my attention. Did vampires have it right? Was Elizabeth Báthory on to something with her young virgin baths? Young plasma transfusion can keep you young?

What Is Young Plasma Transfusion?

One night, I was watching my usual reaction YouTuber, and a clip from a channel talking about conspiracy theories mentioned rejuvenation. The video stated that their father used his grandson’s plasma to help restore his memory capability, but as a side effect, he started de-aging.

Another clip made the same claims, saying the person had de-aged twenty-five years. Are we talking about the neurological network, the organs, the internal clock, or appearance? I don’t know. However, whatever the consequences of the transfusion were, those claims are that the overall process causes the patient to grow younger.

Algolagnia And The Sexual Sadism Paraphilic Disorder Is More Than Just A Fantasy

Paraphilias are often tossed aside with judgmental looks and have people cringe if they do not look disgusted. However, how much do you know about paraphilias and sexual sadism disorder?

The Overall View Of Sexual Sadism Disorder

Sexual sadism is one of many paraphilias in the darker and obscure spectrum of the field. It can create distress in the one living with the paraphilia or the partner. It often interferes with one’s daily life and routine. Sexual sadism can sadly lead to non-consensual harm or pain.

The disorder causes the person living with it to feel arousal through the media of intense involuntary pain. However, it isn’t them who are going through the suffering; it is someone else. It has to be through physical abuse, suffering or humiliation. In other words, they achieve orgasm through the suffering of others.

Therapeutic Phlebotomy Or Bloodletting Has A Medieval History

Many people are fascinated with medieval medical procedures and want to know how people survived them. So, let’s explore the history of bloodletting.

The Overall Humourism Meaning Of Bloodletting

Bloodletting, or by its otherwise name, therapeutic phlebotomy, consists of the withdrawal of blood from a human body or patient. Back then, people believed that it would cure and prevent diseases. The classical way to eject blood from the body was either accomplished by the physician of the time or leeches.

But what do I mean by humourism? Well, in Ancient Greece and Rome, philosophers and physicians adopted what they would call “humourism” as a system of medicine to describe the workings of the human body. Is your head spinning around like Regan in The Exorcist yet?

The History Of Impalement: A Method Of Torture From Ancient To Reformation Times

When we think about impalement, we don’t necessarily associate it with bodies, or do we? Because of Vlad the Impaler, we know that at least one person used it obsessively, but what if I told you it is much older than Vlad?

How Old Is The Practice Of Impalement?

The history of impalement is torturous. It is an excruciating and irreversible method of execution. The classical practice consists of the penetration of a human body through a bottom orifice by an inanimate object such as a stake, pole, spear, or hook. The completion of the torture follows with the perforation at the other end of the object through the torso.

Impalement was often the sentence for crimes against the ‘state’ throughout numerous civilizations. It was a capital punishment reserved for horrid crimes of the time or era. However, death through impalement, due to its horrifying scenery, was also employed to implement fear and suppress the desire for rebellion against a leader.

Do You Have Paraphilias, And Don’t Know It?

The word paraphilia has quite a history in itself. A lot of people associate it with dark and murderous sexual behaviours. However, paraphilias are much more complex than that. Let’s dive into the complexity of the word!

The Overall Generalization Of Paraphilias

People automatically associate paraphilias with sexual depravity, often leading to criminal acts. However, that isn’t the case, and more precisely, one is not exclusive to the other. We owe this misconception to centuries of shaming sexuality, religion, and close-minded doctors and pharmacists.

We are aware that medical procedures have to start somewhere and that it is understandable mistakes would occur. Like many other fields, medicine depends on learning and experimenting. However, some of the worst horror stories of learning come from psychiatry.

The Psychological Profile Behind A Narcopathic Individual

We know about narcissists, and we know about psychopaths. But what happens when both meet and merge together? We have one of the most terrifying psychological possibilities. It becomes a basic recipe for a supervillain!

What Is The Definition Of A Narcopathic Person?

To be a narcopathic person isn’t simple and doesn’t come quickly, either. In today’s age and era, it is simple to jump online and look at someone’s definition of a word and say, “Yes, I have that, too!” However, people should understand that psychology is a complex, lengthy, and severe field of study.

When going on a medical website to help ourselves find some answers to questions tormenting our minds, we must remember that they are broad terms. It is helpful to bring ideas to your doctor or therapist and ask about what you found and if they should consider examining you for it, even psychological findings. But don’t believe because you watch Dr. Phil that you are a certified psychiatrist!

GBM Interviews Author David Wilson

At Gothic Bite Magazine we love welcoming new patients to become part of our asylum. We question them and learn about them. It doesn’t matter what creative field they are part of because they’re our patient now. This week, we welcome David Wilson.

Patient Name: David Wilson

Thank you for this opportunity! My name is David Wilson, and I was born in Bangor, Maine, a city known for a much more famous horror genre author. I’ve lived in Maine my entire life.

As a kid, I was hooked on horror movies, especially the classics and anything specifically from George Romero, Sam Raimi, or Lucio Fulci. I also enjoyed the old stuff starring such greats as Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, and Boris Karloff. I was also an avid collector of comics, including the scary stuff.
