The Art Of Emily Doyle

I am Emily Doyle, a Canadian photographer who uses film photography as my preferred medium. I have recently given up digital and colour film to maintain a strict creative vision and demand more from myself as a photographer.

This came from the dissatisfaction with the work I was producing; it felt boring and separate from myself. By reducing my technique to a bare bones structure, I will find myself again. As for what you will see from me, my work often features my twin sister, Abigail Doyle.

She acts as a muse and subject for me, though she practices her oil painting on her own. We work well together, using each other as inspiration and a way to find different perspectives.

The grotesque and melancholic inspire me the most; in my work, I don’t believe in the rules of photography or what is considered a “good” image. I believe that what stands out is the right choice, whether it is unpleasant or out of focus. As a whole, I want to gain traction amongst a niche community and have people desire an image from me.

I don’t view my work or even other photographers’ work as a simple image; I believe there’s a skill, a painter-like quality, that certain images contain. Something not just anyone can take. I hope to be that photographer.

The following work is titled Screens, a black and white 35mm film photography series. Screens may have an inverse meaning, or perhaps, because of how little meaning they seem to hold, they create a full circle, leading to even more meaning than intended.

Over a few weeks, I captured images of my laptop and phone, documenting what inspires me: my favourite films, Persona and The Piano Teacher, as well as my online shopping habits and lyrics I’ve attached myself to.

The idea behind this was to take the work of others. What I see daily and layer it, creating an intimate yet infinite interpretation of my online activities. No single piece of content holds more or less value than another. At its core, this is a demonstration of my search history and a reminder of its worth when taken seriously.
